En resumen (the short version)

  • Learn the screen words with their el or la (la serie, el capítulo, el estreno), and make genres with de: una peli de miedo.
  • People in Spain have their own verbs for this, like echar (to be on) and estrenar (to release), and they se ven a whole series in one go.
  • Sum up a plot with va de…, keep it spoiler-free, and give your opinion with me ha… for something you've just watched.

✌🏼 ¡Hola aventurero!

Sunday night. You've just finished a series, and your phone buzzes. It's a Spanish friend: ¿Has visto ya la serie nueva? ¡Me ha flipado! 🍿

You want to answer. You want to say you watched it all in one go, the ending was strange, and you need to talk about it. But all that comes out is sí, muy bien.

Let's fix that. Here's the movie vocabulary in Spanish you'll actually use: the words, the genres, the verbs people use in Spain, and how to say what something's about without ruining it.

The words for the screen and the sofa

Everyday words for films and series
SpanishEnglish
la película / la pelithe film
la seriethe TV series
la temporadathe season
el capítulothe episode
el estrenothe release, the premiere
la cartelerawhat's on at the cinema
el repartothe cast
el / la protagonistathe main character
los subtítulossubtitles
doblada / en versión originaldubbed / in the original language

You'll see episodio on streaming apps, but in conversation most people in Spain say capítulo.

Teacher bit 🤓 Peli is just película cut short. Spanish in Spain does this with lots of everyday words: la tele (televisión), el finde (fin de semana), la bici (bicicleta). The short word keeps the gender of the long one, so it's la peli, even though it doesn't end in -a.

Genres: una peli de…

English puts two nouns together: a horror film, a war film. Spanish puts the main noun first and links them with de. So una peli de miedo is literally "a film of fear".

Film and series genres in Spanish
SpanishEnglish
una peli de miedoa horror film
una peli de acciónan action film
una peli de risaa comedy (informal)
una peli de dibujosan animated film
una peli de ciencia ficcióna sci-fi film
una peli de épocaa period drama
una comedia románticaa romcom
una serie policiacaa crime series
un documentala documentary

Once you know the pattern, you can make your own: una serie de abogados (a legal drama), una peli de zombis, una peli de Navidad 🎄

Films and series also come up when people ask what you do in your free time. There's more on that in talking about hobbies in Spanish.

The verbs people use in Spain

These are the verbs you'll hear in Spain:

Verbs for films and series in Spain
SpanishEnglishExample
echarto show, to be on¿Qué echan esta noche en la tele?
estrenarto releaseLa estrenan el viernes.
salirto be in it (an actor)Sale la actriz de la serie de abogados.
engancharse ato get hooked onMe he enganchado a una serie coreana.
verse algo del tirónto watch something in one goMe la vi del tirón.

¿Qué echan? has no subject. It's the same "they" as in English "what are they showing?", meaning nobody in particular.

And look at Me la vi. Vi la serie and Me vi la serie both mean "I watched the series". The me adds the idea that you watched all of it, start to finish. Spanish does the same with food: Me comí la pizza means you ate the whole pizza 🍕

¡Ojo! Echar has another meaning

¿Qué echan en la tele? means "What's on TV?" But Me han echado del trabajo means "I've been fired". Same verb, very different evening 😅

Say what it's about (no spoilers!)

When someone asks ¿De qué va? (What's it about?), they want two or three sentences, not the whole plot. This order works for any film or series:

A spoiler-free summary in three parts
PartExampleIn English
What it isEs una serie policiaca danesa. It's a Danish crime series.
What it's aboutVa de una inspectora que investiga un robo en un museo. It's about a detective investigating a robbery at a museum.
Where or when it's setEstá ambientada en Copenhague. It's set in Copenhagen.

Va de (from ir de) is the everyday way to say "it's about" in Spain. You'll also read trata de or trata sobre, which sounds a bit more formal, like a review in a newspaper.

Phrases for avoiding spoilers
SpanishEnglish
¡No me lo cuentes!Don't tell me!
¡No me la destripes!Don't spoil it for me! (literally "don't gut it")
¿Por qué capítulo vas?Which episode are you on?
Y hasta aquí puedo leer.And that's all I'm saying.

Hasta aquí puedo leer comes from an old Spanish TV quiz show, and people still use it all the time.

Lucía's tip: ask first

Before you say anything about a series, ask ¿Por qué capítulo vas? It's polite, and it stops you giving the ending away by accident.

Giving your opinion

Now the fun part: was it any good?

Saying what you thought of a film or series
SpanishEnglish
Me ha flipado.I loved it. (very informal)
Es buenísima.It's really good.
Los actores lo bordan. The actors are brilliant.
Tiene un final que no te esperas. The ending really surprises you.
No está mal.It's not bad.
Se me hizo un poco larga. It felt a bit long.
Es un tostón.It's really boring. (informal)
Está sobrevalorada.It's overrated.

Most of these end in -a because la peli and la serie are both feminine. For un documental, it's buenísimo and largo.

Teacher bit 🤓 Watch the tense. If you watched it today or this week, people in Spain say me ha gustado or me ha encantado. If it was last month or last year, it's me gustó or me encantó. That's the open box and the closed box from Spanish past tenses explained.

A chat about what to watch

Two flatmates on the sofa on a Friday night:

A
¿Vemos algo?Shall we watch something?
B
Vale. ¿Una peli o un par de capítulos de algo?OK. A film or a couple of episodes of something?
A
Una peli. ¿Qué echan hoy?A film. What's on tonight?
B
Nada bueno. Pero han estrenado una de miedo que dicen que está muy bien.Nothing good. But they've just released a horror film that's supposed to be really good.
A
¿De miedo? Ni de broma, que luego no duermo.Horror? No way, I won't sleep afterwards.
B
Vale, vale. ¿Y una comedia romántica? Sale el actor de la serie de abogados.OK, OK. What about a romcom? The actor from that legal drama is in it.
A
¡Ah, esa! Me la recomendó mi hermana. ¿Doblada o en versión original?Oh, that one! My sister recommended it. Dubbed or original version?
B
En versión original con subtítulos, que así practicas.Original with subtitles, so you get some practice.
A
Venga. Pero si es un tostón, la quitamos.Go on then. But if it's boring, we're turning it off.

Una de miedo drops the word peli, because everyone knows what you mean.

Practise it this week

  1. Sum up the last thing you watched

Say three sentences out loud: what it is, what it's about with va de, and where it's set with está ambientada en. For example: Es una peli de época. Va de una familia que tiene una fábrica de chocolate. Está ambientada en Barcelona.

  2. Give it a verdict, in the right tense

Add one opinion from the "Saying what you thought" table. Use me ha… if you finished it this week (Me ha flipado) and me…ó if it was longer ago (Me encantó).

  3. Watch one episode with Spanish subtitles

Put on an episode of a Spanish TV series with Spanish subtitles. When you hear a word from this post, like capítulo or estreno, pause and repeat the line out loud.

Recap ✨

  1. Learn the screen words with el or la: la peli, la serie, el capítulo, el estreno.
  2. Make genres with de: una peli de miedo, una serie de abogados.
  3. Use the verbs people use in Spain: ¿Qué echan?, La estrenan el viernes, Me la vi del tirón.
  4. Sum up a plot with va de… and está ambientada en…, and ask ¿Por qué capítulo vas? before you say anything else.
  5. Use me ha gustado for something you've just watched, and me gustó for something from longer ago.
